For all you NASCAR fans, I know what you are thinking about Jeff Gordon. Yes, he gets the most boos at any given racetrack. Yes, many fans call him a whiner and a baby. But beyond all that, Jeff Gordon is a four-time NASCAR champion with 75 wins under his belt. That is nothing to boo at. These stats have made Jeff Gordon one of the most respected and most recognized drivers in NASCAR history.
Jeff Gordon was born August 4th 1971 in Vallejo, Ca. At the age of 5, his step father, John Bickford, bought him a quarter midget car. Every day after school, Jeff would take his midget car to the local track and race for hours. At the age of 8, he won his first Quarter Midget Car Championship. By the time he was 13, Jeff had won 4 championships in Go Cart racing. While he was racing for these Go Cart championships, he was racing not against other 13 year olds but kids that were 17 and 18 years of age.
When he was 15, Jeff’s family sold their home and moved to Indiana. They did so that Jeff could further advance his racing career. Indiana, for one, has more racetracks and two; Jeff could legally compete in races with his parents’ permission. Jeff joined the United States Auto Club at age 16 and by the time he graduated from high school, he had won over 100 races. At the age of 19, Jeff Gordon became the youngest champions of the USAC National Midget races in the history of the sport. It was during this time that Jeff set his sites on racing the NASCAR circuit. This had always been a lifelong dream of his.
Jeff joined the Nascar Busch Nationals in 1990. He was with Bill Davis racing and won Rookie of the Year that same year. In 1992, began his Nascar Cup career with Hendrick Motorsports. He ran a limited schedule until he ran the circuit full time in 1993. He had 2 great achievements during this time. One was he had 7 top 5 finishes plus he won Rookie of the Year. At the Coca Cola 600 in 1994, Jeff won his very first cup race at Lowe’s Motorspeedway. In 1995, Jeff won his first cup championship. He would go on to win 3 more championships in 1997, 1998 and 2001.
That is just the beginning of an extraordinary career of Jeff Gordon. To date, Jeff has 75 wins, 282 top 10’s and 54 poles. And in 1998, Jeff was named one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers. And Jeff achieved all this all before he reached the age of 35. So why is Jeff Gordon the best NASCAR driver? Just look at his stats. The man is a racing legend!
