Pre-2008
Dale Earnhardt Jr. # 8
Tony Stewart was born on May 20, 1971 in Columbus, Indiana. His sponser is Home Depot. He is single. Tony started his career at seven years old racing go-karts. His father encouraged Tony to be the best he could be, second wasn't good enough. When Stewart was twelve, he won his first championship, The International Karting Federation Grand National Championship. He won another championship at sixteen. At eighteen, he started racing open-wheelers.
In 1994, Tony Stewart won a championship in the National Midget category. He was the first racer to win four Midget Championships in one year and became Rookie of the Year for the IRL that same year. In 1997, Stewart began his NASCAR career running in the Busch Series with Joe Gibbs. He didn't have any wins that year but he had quite a few top ten finishes.
Stewart started racing in the Winston Cup series in 1999. He won three races that year. That was more races won by any rookie in Winston Cup history. He make Rookie of the Year in 1999.
In 2001 Stewart finished second in points to Jeff Gordon in the Winston Cup. In 2002, The Winston Cup became The Nextel Cup. Stewart won The Nextel Cup Championship that year (2002). Having made The Chase again this year he is currently a contender for the championship this year (2007). He has three wins so far this season, ten top fives and twenty-one top tens. He tends to be an aggressive driver and quite often has an explosive temper but I hear he also has a very compassionate side. He likes to climb the fence when he wins.
